Tonight I take off for a conference in Australia. One of the most exciting things about the trip (for me) will be the long plane ride. Time for knitting (about 15 hours, in fact)! My ipod and computer batteries can only last so long, and after that it’s me and sticks and yarn. What knitting should i take? I am thinking that the portablilty of socks cannot be beat…. and in case i haven’t complained about it yet, I am really bored witht the poppysocks. I shouldn’t have used the same sock pattern for two pairs in a row. I am thinking about balling up the gorgeous yarn from my dye-o-rama pal. I will make some lacy toe-up socks from a pattern by ‘My Fashionable Life’ that I bought a while ago. I will use my new knitpicks circs (first time) which i hope will make it through airplane security. I’ll have to bring some bamboo DPN’s just in case. I am pretty sure that there is enough of this yarn that i could also squeeze out a pair of baby socks too. that’s the plan, anyway.

Did you know that australia doesn’t allow knitting needles on domestic flights at all. For people that are so into sheep, i find this a little surprising. Since I have to change planes in australia i am figuring that i will have to check my knitting stuff…. we’ll see.

So, internet knitting friends, any suggestions as to places i must go in Melbourne and Sydney? Any awesome knitting stores?

How I know who you are August 21, 2006

Filed under: Tech and Blogging — karrie @ 8:01 pm

Since I know a lot of people that are starting blogs and I occasionally get a few questions about how to maintain a weblog, I thought I would write a few posts about it. Not necessarily in the most logical order, I am going to start with my favorite visitor counter. There really isn’t any knitting content in here, so just ignore the rest if you want to.

I know who you are. It’s a little creepy, but it is true. If you are a visitor to my blog, i know that you stopped by. I don’t know your name or anything, but i know that someone was here, what state they are from, and what link they used to get here. i know this because of StatCounter. They give detailed installation directions and a Demo on their webpage, but I though I’d highlight some of the features below.

StatCounter is a free service that tracks the last 100 visitors to your webpage for you. It also acts as a “hitcounter” that you can use to display the number of visitors to your page. Statcounter is easy to install. Visit their webpage and register; filling out the details should be pretty straighforward. After entering all of your info and making all of your preference choices, they provide you with HTML code to install into your page. Don’t panic, it is super easy. Copy the block of code. This needs to be present in every page of your blog on which you wish to track visitors. The best way to accomplish this is to place the copied code in the code of your Template (or theme). If you use blogger, for instance, log in and Choose the ‘template tab.’ In this example, I chose to display a hit counter and i want it in the sidebar, so i pasted the code in under the links in the sidebar section. republish the blog and you are in business.

Once you have accrued some visits, there are some pretty cool things that statcounter keeps track of. ‘Recent visitor activity’ is pretty self explanatory, but i thought i would add a screenshot to show you what all the details look like

stat4.jpg
If a visitor has looked at several pages in your blog, you can track the path they followed (unfortunately i don’t have an example of this right now to show you).
they just added a feature that will make a google map of the locations of your recent visitors

stat_map.jpg

Pros
I consider StatCounter superior to some other free services for several reasons. SiteMeter does not provide you with as many details about your visitors, and does not give detailed info on search terms unless you sign up for their paid service. I consider Bravenet to be flat out evil since i discovered that they were the source of pop-up ads (that I had no control over) that my visitors had to endure. Finally, they don’t require you to provide a link to them, or even display a hit counter on your page. It can remain completely invisible to your visitors if you choose.

Cons
really the only complaint I have is that they only keep track of my last 100 visitors. Of course, I could pay them the money they ask for and this would be solved.

Do you have a web tracker that you like to use? Is Sitemeter better than I think? Feel free to chime in with comments.

Boring Blazer to awesome jacket August 16, 2006

Filed under: Crafty, Karrie's Current Projects, non-knitting related — karrie @ 9:56 pm

The origins of this jacket remain a mystery to me.

Pink Blazer before

I am thinking garage sale of a friend, Ross impulse purchase, random hand-me-down… but i can’t really pin it down. I hate the color, and the fit is a little too loose for a cute little blazer. The only thing it really has going for it is that it is made out of a stretch corduroy. So i decided to hack it up for this month’s whiplash challenge. And since the final product will be a much awesomer jacket, I will enter it in the embellish/decorate category.

And to not agonize you with the details yet, I can show you that it turned out better than i expected

Finished jacket

Now - the details… (click through to see larger photos)

First I had to get rid of the hideous color. so I hit the jacket with a strong dose of RIT dye
Into the dye pot

While that was stewing, i got busy on quilting some lining for the jacket. I wanted to add a little bit of insulation so the jacket would actually be warm. The secret inside every good jacket is a silky lining, so i had to have one of those. I figured it would be easiest to make the lining and trim it to fit later.

making the lining

Unfortunately I decided to remove the buttons and pockets after dyeing the jacket. So there are the light shadows of the packets on the chest of the jacket, but I think it gives it a nice vintage jacket look. and dang did i have a time figuring out how to get those buttons off.

Button removed

Snipping the lapels of the blazer changed the whole look of the jacket. It let the collar be free, and made an asymmetric opening for the front of the jacket, that i love.

I took the lining material I had made and sewed it to the seam allowances in the inside of the jacket so the stitching wouldn’t show on the right side. not too shabby.

adding the lining

here is where the real work began. to get a shaggy/faux fur (not FUN fur) to attach to the collar and cuffs, I made a knitted fabric. Using the loop stitch and a big fat skein of red-heart off-white yarn, i went to town. for several evenings. it took a while. actually a long time. i am totally not over how long it took. whew, am i glad that knitting is behind me. and it was totally worth it!

i am not a model

(good god. remind me to brush my hair once in a while) I LOVE the jacket. i love how the original stitching didn’t take the dye. I love how the lining and insulation filled in the jacket and now it fits like a dream. It is such an impovement! Instead of never wanting to wear it, i want to wear it all the time.

Mostly about Loot.

I just deduced that I have been nominated for a blog award… It is an odd category- “Changed URL and Survived,” but it applies! So stop by and vote for me - especially if you knew back when this page was “Knit This.”

Now on to the loot.
First the crafty b-day loot. Alerting your relatives to the Webs sale (and in fact explaining to them exactly what you want) can yield this:

Big Box o' Noro Kureyon

That is a whole sweater’s worth of Noro Kueryon #88. god bless webs.

Last night at knitting, Wenonah brought me the most perfect birthday present.

Ticking clock

It is perfect because I didn’t even know that I liked clocks, and I totally love this one! See (and hear) it in action here. It might take a bit of maintenance to replace a missing knob, but once i do i think i will be able to get the alarm to work too!

Debbie brought some delicious champagney/cidery stuff called Babycham that apparently originates in england. It was pretty tasty and had an adorable deer on the front of it. (picture to be added later since flickr stopped cooperating) Awesome!

All about me August 14, 2006

First, another sneak preview of my whiplash project. Luckily, the deadline has been extended a few days, so i get to work on the finishing touches.

Sneak Preview 2

Begin All About me Content

Hey it’s my birthday (well, actually it was yesterday, but close enough)! I went to the beach to celebrate.

Muir Beach

Thanks for all the birthday wishes internet friends!

Sweatshirts are standard wear on a northern california beach year round. In fact, I saw some kids in sweatshirts “swimming.” We were also the only people there without a kid or a dog. Until the hippies showed up… But they had a drum which is kind of the same.

Cheryl had a meme that i was kinda curious about, so i thought i would give it a go. It is a list of things that you may or may not have done. Click ‘more’ if you really want to see mine.

Bounty from the Godforsaken island August 10, 2006

Last weekend I went to what is technically called an ‘Antiques Sale’ at the Naval base in alameda*. After arriving i realized that this was the event casually referred to by some as the ‘Alameda Flea Market.’ It takes place the first weekend of the month at the old naval base in alameda (you know, the place where the mythbusters go to make a big mess…). For anyone that had to spend 10 hours touring the decommissioned USS hornet with their Dad, it’s right by there. It has a really nice view of san francisco (crappy photo here… And some really great bargains. Here is my less than $20 (including $5 admission) haul:

Loot from the flea market

I was planning to give the bowling ball bag (which is in SUPER shape) to a bowler i know that needs one, but i talked him out of it, so i get to keep it! The fabric was labelled as ‘vintage’ but I am not so sure; it is immaculately clean and has no fading. Got a bunch of knitting needles in US 1, 2, and 3s that are only 7 inches long. These are hard to find in general, and i would hate to pay for new ones. I also got a bunch of buttons in ziploc bags which i promptly transferred to a mason jar. Based on my garage sale and thrifting experience, the most desirable resting place for buttons must be a jar.

*Often referred to by me as “the godforsaken island” though i am not sure why I started doing this. i have always known it is nice there. i guess i like to remind myself that it is an island. weird.
