Not too much craftiness to report… I had some fun this weekend hanging out with kitties and spinning at Abby’s parent’s house.

I can’t believe I didn’t steal one. What I am I up to now? Did I mention that I ate some mangoes this weekend? And then when i got home I ate another… Apparently I am more allergic to mangoes than previously thought. I mean, I know they are in the poison oak family, and I know they usually make my lips and palette itch. Yesterday I woke up and my lips itched (not that unusual since I am allergic to everything). I noticed that it seemed like I had a cold sore, and my lips were a little splitty and weepy (gross). Then I walked by the mirror and saw that my face was twice it’s normal size. I must have looked hideous because I didn’t even have to do any convincing to get a shot at the student health center. Today, I’m mostly recovered. All I have is hives and this giant set of lips

That’s me. My lips aren’t usually that huge. Check here for comparison if you don’t know what I usually look like.

Why didn’t this happen to me on Sunday morning since I had a mango on Saturday as well? Well, I did have a little bit of irritation in the corner of my mouth that I thought might be a cold sore. The internets seem to think that rinsing your mouth out after eating a mango helps minimize the reaction, so I will credit the Bourbon slushies and the wine for preventing me from blowing up like a balloon. And the internets also seem to think that some mangoes are worse than others.

i think I might have to add mangoes to the list of things to permanently avoid. It’ll be right up there under peanuts. Are you allergic to anything?

Oooh. Sorry about the allergy to mangoes. I never would have guessed. I\\\’m not allergic to anything, but my boys are allergic to peanuts.

good think for all the beverages on saturday!

You know, I think those big, pouty lips are totally “in” right now. Who needs botox when you have mangoes?

I’m not allergic to any foods that I know of, just certain medicines. Sulfa drugs make me break out in full-body itchy hives!

Poor you!! Over the past two years, I’ve developed allergies to apples, pears, plums, nectarines, (probably peaches, too), cherries, strawberries… I don’t know about mangoes, because I don’t like them…

KITTY!

That always sucks. I had to have my ex-BF take me to the ER the first night I cooked him dinner. Turns out I am “technically” allergic to baker’s yeast, brewer’s yeast, tomatoes, malt, garlic, and a slew of other things. But when they told me no beer and no bread? I said, “Screw that. I’ll just feel crappy most of the time.”

xtina Says:

I would have catnapped that kitten! I\’m not technically allergic (although I\’d take an allergy if it made my lips look poutier) to mangoes but they give me terrible stomach aches and nausea.

Housework and finished objects.

That’s what I am allergic to.

Hope your face is better now! :-)

we’ll just call you anjelina :) sucks about the mango’s though, they are so yummy. So far I’m not alergic to anything but I know so many people who develop alergies later in life. I cross my fingers that I stay alergy free.

schrodinger Says:

That kitten is too cute!! I can’t believe that you’re allergic to mangoes – that sucks. Well, at least the reaction wasn’t any worse.

I’m allergic to cats (much to my dismay) and, I believe, mohair – let’s just say breathing is a bit tricky around both of them. Luckily no issues with foodstuffs though – fingers crossed.

Caladryl Lotion. The thing you use when you have a rash gives me a rash.

Hi – I found your blog & I love it bc. I am a crafter too. Though I haven’t blogged about it since I started blogging (just last month!) Mind if I bookmark your blog on my site since I will be checking it out? :)

The reason why it took a bit more than once to develop a stronger reaction is because it took a while for the antigen (the thing that makes your body react and cause an allergic reaction) to build up. This could be especially true since you had a few over a short timespan.

But having allergies like that SUCKS. I don\’t have any food allergies like that, but from seeing my patients react like that (I\’m a pharmacist) I know it can\’t be any fun, and looks painful.

I *love* how that leetle kitty looks :) so sweet. I wish my landlords allowed pets in this house. *sigh* Have to wait until student loans are paid off.

Love your site!

I\\\’ve been developing something similar from prawns over the past few years and it has really amped up in the last 6 months. I feel for you!

Carol Says:

I’m allergic to tree and grass pollen. But the women in my family have something called a geographic tongue. Certain chemicals cause the tongue to becone swollen and irritated. Common items that have the irritant chemical are walnuts, cantalope, parmesan cheese and there is a grape candy out there that my sister and I both find incredibly painful if we accidentally eat it. This reaction is not a true allergy, but it IS supposedly rare. Although all the women in my family have it in varying degrees!

kimchi Says:

OMG!!!CUTE KITTY!!!!! wow, you have strong will power…and cripes!!! your LIPS ARE HUGE! and you look miserable in that picture! i hope you are feeling better now? :o )it\’s good to see you blogging! i\’ve been MIA myself as well…
that is so interesting–how did you know that mangoes are in the poison oak family? are kiwi, honeydew and canteloupe in that family as well? bc whenever i eat those fruits, the insides of my ears get really itchy…my mom doesn\’t think i\’m allergic but i do. it\’s just super uncomfortable. it happens after eating a ton a pineapple and bananas and some other fruits…sheesh. at least peaches are still safe. :o )yummmm…and tomatoes! YUM…
p.s. i think the bourbon slushies must have helped a LOT the saturday before!

Tanya Says:

Oh! That stinks! My MIL has a reaction when she cuts them up, etc, but seems to be able to eat them. Something about the skin maybe?
Amazing willpower to avoid kittenknapping, though!

Ugh! I feel your pain – or rather itch from swelling. I’m not allergic to mangoes, but just recently had to go in for a shot because a combination of too much indulgence in garden-fresh tomatoes and then some raw garlic pushed me past my relatively low allergic threshold. Ugh. Huge lips, swollen tongue, itchy mouth, rashy red face. I looked sooo luverly.

And, my garden is just torturing me with the constant production of such beautiful tomatoes. Luckily I have many tomato-eager friends. sigh.

bb Says:

I have the same reaction to mangoes and other fruits! My lips swell, the corners of my mouth crack, and I get really fine bumps on my lips so they feel like sandpaper! I used to call it my ‘funky lip disease’. I ‘m glad I’m not alone!!!
