Juicifixion April 8, 2007

pronounced: juice-a-fiction

Many easters ago at a BBQ in that wacky town of El Cerrito, a bunch if drunks had an idea. Generally, a juicifixion is any juice-based alcholic drink consumed in the daylight on an Easter sunday when no religious ceremonies were attended. i made a version just for 2007.

1 1/2 ounces grapefruit juice
1 ounce Gin
Shake together with ice.
Pour into a glass rimmed with Baker’s sugar. Float about 4 drops of bitters on top. Garnish with a bare plastic sword.

Drink up the symbolism.

I was partially inspired to write this up since I just bought an entire book about drinks: The Art of the Bar (Review coming soon!). The other part of the inspiration is JenLa, cause they seem like they would like this kind of thing.

Spinning again.

First of all, Happy Easter. As a knitter/dyer this means that you have to be on your toes to get half-price dyes at the grocer and drug store tomorrow. They are intended to be used for eggs, but we all know that the best thing to dye is yarn. You can read about Gen and my easter yarn dyeing adventure a few years ago here.

I have been utterly and completely jealous over the things being spun up over at Trailing yarn. So I had to take my wheel out, dust it off and spend an hour spinning. I decided to spin up some roving that I dyed in shades of turquoise and orangey brown (thought I had a pic, but I can’t find one). I am pretty rusty, having not spun in many months but managed a pretty fine (yet uneven) single:

And then I navajo-plied it into some real yarn (check out how Elizabeth does it).

It’s kinda ugly, but I like it. Spinning thin singles on my lendrum is really a chore. I forgot to put on the fast flyer, so I was pedalling like a maniac. I am pretty proud that though my skill stagnated, none of the single came apart when plying. hooray!

EDIT: I forgot to remind you that today is the last day to sign up for the Scraptastic Granny Square swap!. Hurry!

A Windfall of craftiness April 1, 2007

Filed under: Crafty,Karrie's Current Projects — karrie @ 8:42 am

First, the bad news… I applied for a table to sell my craft wares at the SF Bazaar Bizaare in May, and I didn’t get accepted. ho-hum. I can’t believe they have chosen to leave themselves moustache-less. Now I wish I would have done something to get involved like drop spindle demonstrations, or crocheting with video tape or something but those deadlines passed long ago, and I was hedging my bets on the Bazaar…

But there are other things to cheer me up. I took some nice photos for the Bazaar application, and one features the newest item in my shop: The Old West Moustache Set.

Cookie A gave my stitch markers a mention and now they are selling as fast as I can list them. Thanks so much Cookie!

I have also received a bunch of swap goodies from swap-bot.
I really enjoyed the tea swap. I got these from Germany:

And my partner in the “Crafty Chick” swap really outdid herself.

A Martha Stweart Living, paper goodies, a hand sewn case, yarn, and more! See that green yarn in the top left? i immediately started using it in granny squares.

Those grannies are really starting to pile up, by the way….

The front two are from swap-bot swaps!

Just a reminder, if you would like to swap a few granny squares, sign-ups for my Scraptastic granny square swap are open until April 8th.
