Is he crazy, or does have a cell phone?

Berkeley is a strange place. There are a lot of
strange people. In addition to being thick with co-ops and retired hippies, the
University contributes a sizeable student population which has many quirks of
its own. Did I mention that it is in California? Perhaps it is because I am
from Ohio and was schooled in the East, but California is different. The kids
wear flip-flops all year – even up here where it rains a lot and gets a touch
chilled in the winter. People are always nice. And people are always late to
everything – i guess because they are just so laid back. seriously. They are

a hurry. And have i told you that on two occasions I found intact, unsmoked
joints on the sidewalk.

Often when
walking around downtown, or even on campus you can run across people having very
colorful conversations. With themselves. Here is where the fun comes in… Is
it a student on a cell phone, or a homeless guy with a backpack talking to
himself? it is amazing how difficult it is to tell sometimes. Students and
crazies often look a lot alike. I like to try and figure it out so I know if I
should avoid eye contact.

Around the
Christmas holiday the students all flee back to southern california where they
are from and there is less of a buffer between you and the Bezerkelians. A few
days ago, I crossed paths with an interesting lady. SHe was wearing all black,
and a lot of make-up. could be a crazy. she appeared to be dragging her
black-rollerbag (carry-on sized) toward the campus from BART, so I figured she
was a student returning from break. We were crossing opposite ways in a
crosswalk, and as she got closer I noticed she was a little older than i
thought. I quit staring at her just in time for her to
shove me
out of the way so she could focus her attention on a gold beamer waiting for us
to get across the street. She smacked the hood of the car and screamed “I would
look a lot better than you driving that car, you child molester.” Then she
continued walking across the street.

I
totally sized that one up wrong.
