I have the same reaction to mangoes and other fruits! My lips swell, the corners of my mouth crack, and I get really fine bumps on my lips so they feel like sandpaper! I used to call it my ‘funky lip disease’. I ‘m glad I’m not alone!!!

Ugh! I feel your pain – or rather itch from swelling. I’m not allergic to mangoes, but just recently had to go in for a shot because a combination of too much indulgence in garden-fresh tomatoes and then some raw garlic pushed me past my relatively low allergic threshold. Ugh. Huge lips, swollen tongue, itchy mouth, rashy red face. I looked sooo luverly.

And, my garden is just torturing me with the constant production of such beautiful tomatoes. Luckily I have many tomato-eager friends. sigh.

Oh! That stinks! My MIL has a reaction when she cuts them up, etc, but seems to be able to eat them. Something about the skin maybe?

that is so interesting–how did you know that mangoes are in the poison oak family? are kiwi, honeydew and canteloupe in that family as well? bc whenever i eat those fruits, the insides of my ears get really itchy…my mom doesn\’t think i\’m allergic but i do. it\’s just super uncomfortable. it happens after eating a ton a pineapple and bananas and some other fruits…sheesh. at least peaches are still safe. :o)yummmm…and tomatoes! YUM…
p.s. i think the bourbon slushies must have helped a LOT the saturday before!

I’m allergic to tree and grass pollen. But the women in my family have something called a geographic tongue. Certain chemicals cause the tongue to becone swollen and irritated. Common items that have the irritant chemical are walnuts, cantalope, parmesan cheese and there is a grape candy out there that my sister and I both find incredibly painful if we accidentally eat it. This reaction is not a true allergy, but it IS supposedly rare. Although all the women in my family have it in varying degrees!

I\\\’ve been developing something similar from prawns over the past few years and it has really amped up in the last 6 months. I feel for you!

The reason why it took a bit more than once to develop a stronger reaction is because it took a while for the antigen (the thing that makes your body react and cause an allergic reaction) to build up. This could be especially true since you had a few over a short timespan.

But having allergies like that SUCKS. I don\’t have any food allergies like that, but from seeing my patients react like that (I\’m a pharmacist) I know it can\’t be any fun, and looks painful.

I *love* how that leetle kitty looks so sweet. I wish my landlords allowed pets in this house. *sigh* Have to wait until student loans are paid off.

That kitten is too cute!! I can’t believe that you’re allergic to mangoes – that sucks. Well, at least the reaction wasn’t any worse.

I’m allergic to cats (much to my dismay) and, I believe, mohair – let’s just say breathing is a bit tricky around both of them. Luckily no issues with foodstuffs though – fingers crossed.
