I find stats interesting but repelling at the same time. I’m interested in general popularity- how many people visit pages, but when other people are tracking where I’ve come from, which country I’m from etc I find it’s a bit creepy and I’d even go as far to say that I avoid their pages if I know they have a counter tracking that. It just feels like I’m being…monitored. Watched. I have to admit, I’m a bit of a ‘lurker’- I read stuff but am often too shy to comment, so I really don’t post that much on other peoples’ sites (even though they normal welcome comments). I’ve got sitemeter, but I just look at it to see how many people have visited that week and that’s it.

Thanks so much! I was using ShinyStat, which is crapola. Doesn’t do anything, and their site is totally incoherent. But I wasn’t looking forward to shopping all over the place to find the best alternative. Now I don’t have to – I’m going to just follow your advice!

Great info! I used to like retrostats as an adjunct to sitemeter and statcounter, but they seem to have radically changed since I last used them, maybe more toward the evil bravenet model…

Isn\’t that fun! I am a stat tracking fanatic. I\’ve been using Sitemeter along with Statcounter. I\’ve been blocking certain people from viewing my blog by ip address and wouldn\’t have been able to without Statcounter. So useful!
